Rhetoric, Dissent, and Protest: Protest is a key engine of American political history. Indeed, our nation was founded on dissent, spurred by the Boston Tea Party and dissent and protest continue today. In looking at key moments of protest from the last half of the 20th century and from the beginning of the 21st century, we will examine why we protest, what resulted from those protests, and what we learned. Specifically, we will explore how language, symbolism, and persuasion fuel resistance and inspire change. From historical speeches and manifestos, to modern day social media activism, from wearing pink hats to carrying umbrellas, this course examines how individuals and groups crafts messages and build movements that challenge the status quo.
