This summer field work course in Indonesia will be led by Professor Quatrini and will take place in the Sultanate of Yogyakarta on the island of Java and Pemuteran on the island of Bali. In cooperation with the faculty and students of Atma Jaya University in Yogyakarta, we will learn some basic Indonesian and study various environmental, cultural, and political issues. We will also participate in the release of baby sea turtles and a tree planting activity to facilitate the laying of sea turtle eggs. We will spend the remaining two weeks in Pemuteran on Bali. In cooperation with the staff at Karang Divers and the nongovernmental organization Biorock Indonesia, we will participate in coral cleaning, restoration, and surveying. We will also take a day trip to Menjangan Island to investigate the government approach to coral conservation, which will serve as a comparison to NGO work.
